Beware Poor Imitations

Every artist faces comparison. Sometimes it’s flattering, sometimes it’s frustrating, but it’s almost inevitable when you choose to create something people connect with.

Beware Poor Imitations began after reading a comment suggesting that my work was little more than an imitation. Rather than responding with an argument, I responded the only way I know how—by creating another artwork.

The title embraces that moment with a sense of humour. Inspired by the world of luxury brands, where imitation has always existed alongside originality, the artwork asks a simple question: what really makes something authentic?

Throughout the composition are subtle visual details that reward careful observation, including one of my favourite hidden elements—a mysterious female figure concealed within the iconic perfume bottle. Some viewers spot her immediately. Others never do.

Like creativity itself, the most interesting things are often hiding in plain sight.
