Material Grrrrl

Few artists have reinvented themselves as successfully—or as often—as Madonna. Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, she has continually challenged expectations, influenced popular culture and remained one of the most recognisable figures in modern music.

Material Grrrl was one of my earliest experiments in transforming portrait photography through Photoshop. Rather than creating a scene from scratch, I wanted to explore how colour, texture and digital composition could completely reimagine an existing image.

Madonna’s discography forms the backdrop of the artwork, celebrating the incredible catalogue of music that has accompanied generations of fans. Rather than hiding references throughout the piece, I chose to let the colours, energy and music take centre stage.

Looking back, this artwork represents an important milestone in my own creative journey and the development of the style that would eventually become Neil Pengelly Studios.
